Yukon storm shelter permit: fee and requirements

Summary of the City of Yukon's Storm Shelter Requirements sheet, which covers shelters added to an existing single-family or two-family home. The city says the sheet is not all-inclusive. Not legal advice; confirm with the city.

Fee

The city's residential permit fee list shows Storm Shelter: $45. It adds that all permits carry a $4 state fee and a $0.50 city collection fee.

What the application needs

  • The property and applicant address.
  • A detailed drawing and specifications signed and sealed by a licensed Oklahoma engineer.
  • A copy of the installer's contract.
  • Any other information the Development Services Department asks for. The application can be made by the owner or by a licensed contractor.

Placement and site rules

  • The shelter must meet yard and building line setbacks and must not encroach into utility easements.
  • A minimum 5 ft setback, or more depending on shelter depth, between the house foundation and the shelter, so the foundation isn't damaged.
  • If visible from the street, the shelter must be landscaped within 30 days to conceal it.
  • Waste dirt must be removed within 5 business days.
  • The permit must be posted where it is visible from the street.

Registration

The requirements sheet says all storm shelters are required to be registered with the City of Yukon. The city's Storm Shelter Registry page describes a free program that gives rescue crews shelter locations if an exit is blocked. Questions: (405) 354-6676.

Before you hire

Ask the installer who gets the engineer's seal, whether the permit fees and registration are handled for you, and who handles the dirt removal and landscaping. See questions to ask an installer.
